Born for the “Real World” : Industrialization Opportunities and Challenges for Multi‑Primary LCD Displays

The pursuit of ultrarealistic image quality has long been a defining theme in the evolution of display technology. By introducing additional primaries, multiprimary displays provide a necessary pathway toward reproducing the real world, offering significant potential and value in expanding color gamut for higher image fidelity, approximating natural spectral distributions to support visual comfort and health, and improving luminous efficacy and energy efficiency.

In recent years, multiprimary approaches have emerged as an important direction for the industrial evolution of several cuttingedge display technologies, including Micro LED and laser displays, spurring rapid exploration and experimentation. Today, with the fast advancement of RGB MiniLED backlit LCD technology, multiprimary LCDs have also established a solid foundation for largescale commercialization. However, building a coordinated endtoend industry ecosystem remains challenging, requiring fullchain alignment from content capture and transmission to encoding/decoding and final display rendering.

This talk will focus on the industrialization opportunities and key technical hurdles of multiprimary LCDs, systematically examine their growth potential, and look ahead to the more realistic and immersive visual experiences they can enable in highend imaging, immersive entertainment, and virtual content creation.
